Why detailing a bike is not the same as detailing a car
Most people assume bike detailing is just a smaller car detail. It is not. A bike exposes its paint in ways a car never does.
A car keeps almost all its paint on large, flat, mostly vertical or horizontal panels. A bike spreads a small amount of paint across a fuel tank, side panels, mudguards, and fairings, and surrounds it with parts that are not painted at all: chrome, raw and coated metal, plastic cowls, an exposed engine, and an exhaust that runs hot. There is far less painted area, and every bit of it is closer to the road, the weather, and your own body.
That last point matters. Your knees grip the tank. Your boots brush the side panels. A tank bag or saddlebag rubs the same spots every ride. On a car, nobody is constantly touching the paint; on a bike, the rider is part of the wear pattern. The tank in particular takes scratches that a car panel never would.
Bikes also live outdoors more than cars do. Plenty of Delhi bikes are parked on the street or in an open stilt, not a closed garage, so they soak up more direct sun, more dust, and the full force of the monsoon. The protection question for a two-wheeler is therefore sharper than for a car: the paint is smaller, more exposed, and more often touched, so the right protection earns its keep faster.
What ceramic coating actually does for a bike
Ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds into your paint's clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. It fills the microscopic pores in the clear coat, so water beads up and rolls off and dirt has far less to grip. On a bike that means the tank and panels stay glossy, rinse clean faster, and resist the water spots that hard water leaves behind.
The protection is chemical and cosmetic, not physical. A quality coating is silica-based (SiO2), strongly water-repellent, and adds real resistance to UV fade and chemical staining from bird droppings and tree sap (Gtechniq). That is exactly the kind of damage a Delhi bike faces parked in the open: sun on the tank all afternoon, dust bonding to the surface, bird mess etching the clear coat if it sits.
Here is the part most people get wrong about the 9H number. Ceramic coatings are often rated 9H on the pencil hardness scale, which measures resistance to a hard pencil being dragged across a surface (ASTM D3363). That tells you the coating resists fine swirl marks during washing. It does not mean the coating is bullet-proof or that it stops a stone (IGL Coatings). A 9H coating will still chip if a pebble flies off the road and hits your tank at speed.
So ceramic is not a force field. It will not stop a stone chip, and a cheap coat applied over badly prepped paint can fail in months. The coating bonds over the paint, so the prep underneath decides everything. Done properly, on a corrected and decontaminated surface, a professional ceramic coating holds for roughly two to five years, and premium coatings are rated longer. What PPF actually does for a bike
Paint protection film is a clear, thick urethane (TPU) film laid over the paint, around 180 to 210 microns thick. Where ceramic is a thin chemical layer, PPF is a physical shield. It is the only protection that actually absorbs an impact, which is its whole job and it is very good at it.
On a bike, that impact protection is most useful on a few specific surfaces. The fuel tank takes knee rub, belt-buckle scratches, and tank-bag wear. The front fender and the leading edge of the fairings catch stone chips and grit thrown up at speed. The headlight and any forward-facing panel take the worst of highway debris. PPF on those zones stops the damage before it reaches the paint.
Quality film also has an elastomeric top coat that self-heals light scratches and swirls: warm it with sun or hot water and the fine marks re-flow and disappear (XPEL). What it will not do is heal a deep cut or a hard chip that goes through the top coat, and on a rushed install the edges can lift. Good film, properly fitted, lasts five years or more, and premium film carries a long warranty against yellowing and cracking, though warranty cover is not the same as lifespan and usually depends on a certified install (XPEL warranty).

Which one is worth it for your bike
Different bikes and different riders get different answers. Here is how we advise customers, by the bike you actually own.
Daily commuter (a regular 100 to 200cc bike used for the city run). Ceramic coating, on its own, is the value pick. It deals with the everyday damage here, sun, dust, water spots, bird mess, and makes the weekly clean far quicker. PPF on a budget commuter is usually more than the bike needs, unless you specifically keep getting tank scratches.
Weekend cruiser or a Royal Enfield you take pride in. Ceramic over the whole bike for the gloss and easy upkeep, and PPF on the fuel tank if you do touring km or want to protect the tank from belt and knee rub. The tank is the heart of these bikes and the most worth protecting.
Premium or superbike (Harley-Davidson, a Hayabusa, anything with serious paint). Both, without hesitation. PPF on the tank, front fender, fairings, and headlight to take the stone chips, ceramic over the rest for gloss and UV protection. On a bike where the paint is a real part of the value, the combination is the right call, not an upsell.
Budget bike you plan to sell soon. Honestly, a good steam wash and polish is often all it needs. We will tell you that rather than push protection you will not get the value back on.
That last one matters. If the cheaper option is genuinely fine for your bike, we will say so. The point of detailing is to protect what is worth protecting, not to coat everything by default.
Can you do both ceramic and PPF on a bike?
Yes, and on a bike where it makes sense, the combination is the strongest protection available. The order is what matters: PPF goes on first, on the high-impact zones, then ceramic goes over the film and the rest of the paint.
This gives you the best of each. The film takes the physical hits on the tank and front; the ceramic adds gloss and hydrophobic, easy-clean behaviour across the whole bike, including over the PPF itself, which makes the film easier to keep clean and helps it resist staining. Delhi's climate and your bike's paint
A bike parked in the open in a Delhi summer sits under sun strong enough to fade unprotected paint over time. New Delhi runs a very high UV index of around 9 from April to June, and parts of the city touched close to 50 degrees C in the 2024 heat (Weather Atlas; Washington Post).
