The three methods are not the same job
People use "steam cleaning", "shampoo", and "dry cleaning" as if they were three names for one service. They are three different processes that move different amounts of water through your cabin, and that single difference, how wet the fabric gets, decides almost everything else.
Here is what each one actually does.
Steam cleaning: heat, not water
A steam machine heats water in a boiler and releases it as pressurised vapour through a nozzle. The vapour is hot, above 100 degrees C at the tip on a proper machine, but it carries very little liquid water. You point it at a seat seam, a floor mat, or a sticky console, and the heat loosens grime while a microfibre cloth wipes it away.
The reason steam matters inside a car is sanitisation. Moist heat kills microorganisms by coagulating and denaturing their proteins, which is the recognised principle behind steam sterilisation (CDC, Steam Sterilization guideline). At the pressure our machines run, steam reaches into seat seams, stitching, and the gaps around the gear console where bacteria and mould actually live, and it leaves nothing behind except dry heat. No detergent residue, no soaked foam.
Shampoo cleaning: hot water extraction
Shampoo cleaning, the technical name is hot water extraction, is the heavy-duty option. A machine sprays a mix of hot water and upholstery shampoo into the fabric, the surface is agitated with a brush to break up embedded dirt, and then a strong vacuum pulls the dirty solution back out.
It is genuinely the most effective method for deep, set-in contamination: a carpet that has soaked up monsoon mud, a seat with months of body oils worked into the weave, a stubborn stain a cloth will never reach. The agitation plus extraction lifts dirt that steam alone cannot.
The catch is moisture. Even with a good extractor pulling most of the water back, the fabric and the foam padding under it stay damp, and they take several hours to dry fully. In a dry climate that is fine. In Delhi, during the monsoon or a humid spell, slow drying is a real problem, which is the whole point of the next section.
Dry cleaning: the low-moisture middle ground
Interior dry cleaning is a bit of a misnomer, it is not completely dry, but it uses far less water than shampoo extraction. It relies on specialist low-moisture cleaning agents, targeted brushing, and either encapsulation (where the cleaner dries and crystallises around the dirt so it can be vacuumed away) or light extraction. Different products are matched to the surface: fabric seats are treated differently from faux-leather, carpets differently from the headliner.
It dries quickly, it is gentle on materials, and it is the right call for routine upkeep on an interior that is not heavily soiled. What it does not do is rescue a cabin with years of build-up, that is shampoo territory.

No single method is best at everything. Steam wins on hygiene and on adding almost no moisture. Shampoo wins on raw cleaning power for heavy dirt. Dry cleaning wins on speed for light jobs. A proper interior detail often uses more than one: steam to sanitise and reach the gaps, extraction only on the fabric that genuinely needs it.
Why moisture is the deciding factor in Delhi
This is the part most "steam vs shampoo" guides written for cooler countries get wrong, because they do not have Delhi's monsoon.
Mould needs moisture to grow, and the established guidance is blunt about the timeline: dry wet materials within 24 to 48 hours and in most cases mould will not grow, beyond that it will (US EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). A car cabin is far harder to dry than a room. It is small, sealed, padded, and during the monsoon (June to August in Delhi, per Weather Atlas) the air going into it is already humid, so the water in a freshly shampooed seat has nowhere to go.
That is how a clean ends up causing the exact smell it was meant to remove. Shampoo the seats, park the car in monsoon humidity, let the foam padding stay damp for two days, and you have grown mould inside the cushion. The car smells worse a week later than it did before the clean.
Steam avoids this because it never adds that much water in the first place. The vapour condenses, the surface is wiped, and the cabin is effectively dry within the hour. In a city where the cabin temperature can sit above 60 degrees C in summer and the air is soaked for three months of monsoon, the method that adds the least water is the safer default. Delhi's summer heat near 50 degrees C (Washington Post) bakes any organic residue too, so leaving shampoo residue or damp fabric behind is a worse idea here than almost anywhere else.
None of this means shampoo is banned. It means shampoo must be followed by proper, forced drying, and that steam should carry the routine work.
Which method for which part of your car
The cabin is not one material. The right method changes surface by surface.
Fabric seats and carpets with light soiling: steam, followed by a wipe. It sanitises and lifts everyday dirt without wetting the foam.
Fabric seats and carpets with heavy, set-in stains: shampoo extraction on the affected area only, then force-dry it. This is the one job where steam is not enough and the extra moisture is worth it, as long as drying is handled.
Leather and faux-leather seats: never shampoo-soak leather. Steam at a controlled distance plus a leather-specific cleaner and conditioner. Leather cracks and dries out if treated like fabric.
Dashboard, console, steering wheel, door panels: steam. These are the high-touch hard surfaces where you want sanitisation and zero residue, not a wet wipe-down.
AC vents and the duct behind them: steam, not shampoo. The evaporator and ducts are where moisture condenses, dust collects, and mould grows, which is the usual cause of that musty smell when you switch the AC on (Consumer Reports). Steam treats the source with heat. Pouring more water in via a wet method is the opposite of what that area needs.
Headliner (roof lining): steam or dry cleaning only. The headliner is glued fabric, and soaking it can loosen the adhesive and leave sag marks. Low moisture is the rule.
Roof, boot, and mats that come out: mats can take a full shampoo and wash because you can dry them in the open. Fixed carpet inside the cabin cannot be dried as easily, so it gets the gentler treatment.
