Here is the part most buyers never see. A car dealership sells cars. It does not, as a rule, run a detailing bay. So when you add PPF or ceramic coating to the deal, the dealer almost always sub-contracts the actual work to a third party, then bundles it into your invoice at a markup. You rarely get to choose the product, you rarely see who does the work, and you almost never see how it is done.

That matters because the quality of a PPF or ceramic job depends almost entirely on two things: the surface preparation and the skill of the person fitting it. Any dust, grit or imperfection left on the paint gets sealed permanently under the film or locked under the coating (Automotive Elegance). • A full cure window. A ceramic coating needs roughly 24 to 48 hours before it faces water or weather, and longer to fully harden, and rain, washing or a bird dropping during that window can ruin it (Chemical Guys). A specialist plans for that. A same-day dealer hand-back does not.

PPF earns its keep on the same logic. A quality film is a thick urethane layer that absorbs stone chips and self-heals light scratches when warmed, but a film fitted over poorly prepped paint, or with lifting edges from a rushed cut, fails early no matter how good the roll was (XPEL). The film is a small part of the price. The hands and the prep are most of it.

6. What exactly does the warranty cover, and who do I come back to if something goes wrong? Make sure there is a real person at the end of it.
