What is a steam car wash, exactly?

A steam car wash is a wash that cleans using hot water vapour rather than buckets of water, sponges, or spinning brushes. Inside the machine, ordinary tap water is heated in a boiler until it turns into low-pressure, low-moisture vapour. That vapour is directed at the car through a nozzle, and the cleaning works mainly through heat, which softens and releases dirt, oil, and grime so it lifts off the surface and can be wiped or rinsed away (Wikipedia: vapour steam cleaner).

The important word there is vapour. A steam wash is not a high-volume pressure wash and it is not a hose. It is a controlled jet of hot steam that carries very little actual water, which is why a panel is barely wet after steaming and dries in moments. The benefits of a steam car wash

It saves a large amount of water.
